Preservation and Materials used for Preserving Wood
The study of wood technology is a very important aspect for extending the life of wood. It is always best to keep the wood dry. Wood should be protected from white ants, which are the most destructive to wood. Therefore, proper protection of wood should be observed by applying appropriate type of oil or chemical on the wood.
The following types of materials are commonly used to protect wood.
(i) Type of oil
(ii) Water soluble type
(iii) Type of solvent
(i) Oil type
The oil, which is called creosotes, is obtained from the distillation of coal tar or wood tar. Creosotes are widely used for external use on railway sleepers and piles, etc. The wood to be painted does not pay with the use of creosotes.
(ii) Water soluble type
These include zinc chloride as the most commonly used wood preservative. It is adopted for the protection of roofing timber where mines have high humidity and wood to reduce the risk of fire. Sodium fluoxetine is more expensive than zinc chloride, but it is highly toxic to fungi. "Copper sulfate" is very toxic to cookies. Its high solubility in water makes it a temporary protection. The "ASCU" treatment is a new rescue developed at the Forest Research Institute.
(iii) Solvent type
These usually include copper and zinc salts, which dissolve in the soul. After the wood is dyed, the oil evaporates. Toxic compounds remain pigmented in wood. They are clean and durable and in most cases treated wood can be painted, waxed or polished. They are easily prayed or easily covered but they are expensive.
